Three Kinds of Illnesses of the Beings

"All beings have three illnesses, which are: 1) greed, 2) the ill-will, and 3) ignorance. Three kinds of medicine will cure these three illnesses. Meditation upon impurities will act as a medicine against desire, (meditation) on the love-kindness will act as medicine against ill-will, (meditation) on the knowledge of causal relations will act against ignorance.

Oh good man! In order to end the desire, one meditates on the non-desire; to end the ill-will, the meditation upon the non-ill-will is performed; to end the ignorance, one meditates on non-ignorance. In the three illnesses we do not have the three kinds of medicine, and in the three kinds of medicine we do not have the three kinds of illness. Oh Good man! Since there are no the three kinds of medicine in the three kinds of illness (i.e., there is no purity in the illness), this is the non-eternal, non-bliss, non-self, and non-pure. In the three kinds of medicine there are no three kinds of illness (i.e., there are no impurities in the medicines). Hence, the Eternal, Bliss, the Self, and the Pure."

Like the Utpala – The Blue Lotus

Bodhisattva Kasyapa said: "Oh World Honored One! How many things are required of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva to be perfect, such that he does not quarrel with the world, and does not get impregnated and defiled by what one obtains in the world?"

The Buddha said: "The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is perfect in ten things, does not quarrel with the world and does not get impregnated and defiled by what one obtains in the world. What are the ten? They are: 1) faith, 2) upholding of the precepts, 3) befriending a good friend, 4) reflects (meditates) well within one's own self, 5) efforts, 6) right remembrance, 7) Wisdom, 8 ) right words, 9) zeal for the Wonderful Dharma, and 10) compassion for all beings. Oh good man! As the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is perfect in these ten things, he does not quarrel with the world and does not get impregnated and defiled by what one obtains in the world, as in the case of the Utpala."

And for the sake of Kasyapa, he spoke in a gatha:

"If one does not feel anger,
even against a single being,
and prays to give bliss to these beings,
this is loving-kindness.

If one feels compassion
for all beings,
this is the holy seed.

Endless is the reward.

Even if the five-powered Rishis filled this earth,
and gave to Mahesvara elephants, horses,
and their various possessions,
the reward gained would not equal
one sixteenth of one [impulse of] loving-kindness
that is practiced. "
